Police Investigate Two-Tractor-Trailer Crash on Interstate 44 in Springfield
SPRINGFIELD, MO (February 18, 2026) — Police are investigating a two-tractor-trailer crash on Interstate 44 on Wednesday evening near US-65 in Springfield, leaving injuries and forcing the closure of eastbound lanes.
The crash occurred just after 6 p.m. on I-44 westbound, just east of the US-65 interchange, in the middle of a construction zone.
According to Missouri State Highway Patrol radio reports, the collision involved two semi-trucks, and one of the vehicles caught fire following the impact.
Authorities confirmed that the driver of the burning semi managed to exit the vehicle.
Emergency responders reported injuries but did not immediately release details regarding their severity.
The second semi-truck did not catch fire; however, officials stated that its driver became trapped inside the vehicle.
First responders worked to free the driver, who remained alert and communicating during the rescue effort.
The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) issued an emergency alert stating that I-44 eastbound is closed past Exit 82A at US-65 South/Branson at mile marker 82.2.
Officials are directing eastbound traffic to exit at Glenstone Avenue and use alternate routes.
Traffic has backed up for miles as crews continue responding to the scene.
Authorities continue investigating the crash.
