Sea Lions Taken for Evaluation After Crash on Interstate 70 in Columbia

COLUMBIA, MO (August 13, 2026)— One person suffered moderate injuries after a crash on Interstate 70 involving a semi-truck carrying four people and three sea lions Thursday morning.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash happened near the 133-mile marker of I-70. A 2015 Peterbilt 389 was traveling west when it left the left side of the roadway for an undetermined reason and struck a barrier in the median.

Emergency crews responded to the scene, and one person who had been inside the truck was transported to University Hospital with moderate injuries. Authorities did not immediately release additional information about that person’s condition.

Three sea lions traveling inside the truck appeared to be uninjured after the collision. However, officials transported the animals to the University of Missouri Veterinary Health Center for evaluation as a precaution.

The sea lions had reportedly been traveling in connection with a scheduled appearance at the Missouri State Fair in Sedalia. The Missouri State Fair later announced that the Sea Lion Splash show had been canceled following the crash.

Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop F initially reported that the sea lions would continue their trip to Sedalia after being evaluated, though that social media post was later deleted.

State Fair officials subsequently confirmed that the animals would not appear at the fair.

The crash temporarily affected westbound traffic on Interstate 70, but authorities later reopened the roadway.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol continues to investigate why the semi-truck left the roadway and struck the median barrier.
