Sergeant John Alvies Hurt in Highway 99 Collision [Paradise, CA]

Paradise, CA (August 31, 2026) — Early Saturday morning, Paradise Police detective sergeant John Alvies suffered serious injuries when another vehicle struck his patrol car on Highway 99 in Butte County.

The California Highway Patrol said the crash happened shortly after midnight at Highway 99 and Rio Bonito Road, north of Gridley. Detective Sgt. Alvies was returning from assisting Gridley police during the Butte County Fair when a Dodge Journey struck the driver’s side of his patrol vehicle.

Authorities said 37-year-old Amie Kucera of Oroville allegedly ran a stop sign while driving east on Rio Bonito Road. Investigators found open containers in her vehicle and suspected she was driving under the influence. Police arrested her following the crash.

Two children and an adult passenger were inside the Dodge. A 6-year-old girl and an 8-year-old child suffered injuries and received hospital treatment. Authorities also determined that none of the occupants wore seat belts. The adult passenger, whom officials found intoxicated, received treatment and was later released.

Alvies required emergency treatment before doctors transferred him to a larger medical facility. He is expected to undergo multiple surgeries, and although his injuries are no longer considered life-threatening, officials described them as significant.

The CHP continues to investigate the crash and suspected DUI.
