Shocking Collision on Highway 101 Kills Driver

27-Year-Old Driver Killed After Secondary Crash on Highway 101 in San Luis Obispo County

San Luis Obispo County, CA (June 28, 2025) — Late Tuesday evening, a 27-year-old driver lost their life after a secondary collision on Highway 101 SB involving an overturned pickup truck near San Luis Bay Drive.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 11:05 p.m. on June 23 when a 2020 Toyota Tacoma left the roadway for reasons still under investigation and overturned onto its roof. The disabled truck came to rest in the inside lane of southbound Highway 101 without any lights.

A 1991 BMW 535i traveling south in the same lane then collided with the overturned Tacoma. Authorities said the 73-year-old BMW driver, who was traveling about 65 mph, was unable to see the truck before the impact.

The 27-year-old Tacoma driver suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. The BMW driver sustained minor to moderate injuries and showed no signs of impairment, according to investigators.

The California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the cause of the crash. Officials have not yet released the identity of the deceased.
