Abernathy Woman Killed in Fiery Wrong-Way Crash with Semi in Castro County
Castro County, TX (July 9, 2026) — 57-year-old Stacy Stone died, and a semi-truck driver suffered minor injuries in a fiery wrong-way crash Tuesday morning on State Highway 194 in Castro County.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the collision happened around 8 a.m., about six miles southeast of Hart.
Investigators said Stacy Maureen Stone of Abernathy was driving a 2024 Ford Bronco in the wrong direction on the highway when an eastbound tractor-trailer attempted to avoid a collision by moving into the opposite lane.
Authorities said the Bronco also changed lanes, striking the semi-truck. The impact caused the SUV to catch fire, while the tractor-trailer veered into a ditch and overturned.
Emergency responders pronounced Stone dead at the scene. The semi-truck driver, 29-year-old Marcus Jacob Ortegon of Hereford, was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.
The Texas Highway Patrol continues to investigate the cause of the crash.
