Kern County, CA (March 17, 2026) — Early Saturday morning, 36-year-old Stanley Carbajal of Paso Robles and 20-year-old Gael Salto Fernandez of Wasco lost their lives following a devastating head-on crash on Highway 46 east of Lost Hills in Kern County.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Fernandez was driving a 2011 Toyota Corolla eastbound on State Route 46, east of Corcoran Road, around 2:30 a.m. At the same time, Carbajal was traveling westbound in a 2024 Toyota Prius along the same highway.

Investigators said Fernandez’s vehicle crossed over the painted center dividing lines and entered the westbound lane, placing it directly in the path of Carbajal’s car. The Corolla continued traveling in the wrong lane before the two vehicles collided head-on.

The impact proved fatal for both drivers, and emergency responders pronounced them dead at the scene.
