Vehicle Flees after Austin Bicycle Accident on South Congress Avenue and Mary Street

AUSTIN, TX (February 18, 2026) – Last week, Anthony Arredondo Jr was hurt in a startling bicycle crash on South Congress Avenue and Mary Street.

“South Congress was my main commute to work, so I’ve taken that road so many times,” said Anthony Arredondo Jr.

He was riding his usual route along the busy corridor on his way to Mellow Johnny’s, a bike shop in downtown Austin, when the crash happened.

“As I was rolling through, it left me no reaction time. He kind of just dipped right in front of me,” Arredondo Jr. said.

Dashcam video shows Arredondo Jr. traveling north in the bike lane on South Congress. A silver sedan in front of him turns right onto Mary Street. Arredondo Jr. crashes into the front passenger side of the car and is thrown over the hood.

“I wish there was audio because as soon as I got close, his windows were open. I was yelling and hitting my brakes, knowing they were only going to do so much,” he told FOX 7, adding that he had almost no time to react.

Video shows Arredondo Jr. getting up moments after the crash. The driver initially pulled over and got out to check on him, but then drove away shortly after.

Arredondo Jr. said he suffered a few scrapes and a sprained shoulder. His bike, however, was heavily damaged and is expected to cost about $6,000 to replace.

He said he is grateful he was able to walk away and hopes the incident serves as a reminder for drivers and cyclists to stay alert and share the road safely. He also wants to see additional safety measures on busy streets like South Congress.

For now, Arredondo Jr. is using a rental bike from Mellow Johnny’s to commute.

Austin police have not identified the driver of the silver sedan.
