63-Year-Old Tawny Christner Dies in Tragic Collision on Esplanade Avenue [Chico, CA]

Chico, CA (May 29, 2025) — A six-vehicle crash in Chico on Wednesday afternoon claimed the life of 63-year-old Tawny Christner of Clearlake Oaks and left several others injured.

According to the Chico Police Department, the collision occurred around 1 p.m. at the intersection of Esplanade and East Lassen Avenue. Investigators determined that a gray sedan ran a red light at a high rate of speed and crashed into the rear of a vehicle stopped at the intersection.

The force of the impact pushed the struck vehicle into the intersection, where it collided with several other vehicles waiting at the opposite red light. A B-Line Transit bus was among the six vehicles involved.

Christner, who was riding as a passenger in the rear-ended vehicle, died at the scene. Authorities said she suffered fatal injuries upon impact. The driver of that vehicle sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The driver of the speeding sedan suffered major injuries and was also transported to a local hospital. Several other people involved in the crash received medical treatment for injuries. All other drivers remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

Emergency responders were already nearby after clearing an unrelated hazardous materials incident, allowing them to reach the crash scene immediately. The Chico Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team processed the scene, while the department’s drone team assisted with aerial mapping.

The intersection remained closed for more than seven hours before reopening Wednesday evening. Authorities continue to investigate the crash.
