15-Year-Old Boy Hospitalized After Crash on Westheimer Road in Houston
Houston, TX (August 21, 2025) – A 15-year-old boy sustained injuries in a crash on Westheimer Road.
Earlier this week, a 15-year-old boy suffered injuries after an SUV struck him while he crossed Westheimer Road at Eastside Street, near Lamar High School in Houston.
Surveillance footage captured the moment the teenager waited for a break in traffic before stepping into the crosswalk. As he made it about halfway across the street, an SUV hit him.
Emergency responders treated the teen at the scene, and while he sustained injuries, officials confirmed that he is expected to recover.
The 85-year-old driver of the SUV received a citation for failing to yield the right of way.
The incident raised immediate safety concerns, especially as it happened in a heavily trafficked school zone. Less than 24 hours after KHOU 11 aired the story, Houston Mayor John Whitmire visited the intersection.
He later announced on social media that he instructed the City’s Public Works Department to install a HAWK (High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk) signal at the site.
Currently, the crossing features only a basic student crossing sign, offering no lights or active signals to alert oncoming drivers.
The new HAWK signal will allow pedestrians—especially students—to activate a red light, stopping traffic and allowing them to cross more safely.
The city’s swift response highlights growing concerns about pedestrian safety near schools, particularly on major roads like Westheimer where traffic volumes are high and safe crossing points are limited.
