The crash happened around 9:42 p.m. near Heacock Street, according to the California Highway Patrol. Investigators said the Tesla struck a guardrail before leaving the roadway.

Witnesses told authorities the vehicle had been driven recklessly before the crash. The driver and three passengers became trapped inside the Tesla following the impact.

Riverside County firefighters rescued the occupants, and paramedics transported three people to a hospital with moderate to serious injuries. Authorities have not confirmed whether the fatality happened at the scene or later at the hospital.

Officials closed the two right lanes of the westbound freeway after issuing a SigAlert while crews responded and investigated the crash. The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
