Thomas Smith Killed in Irwin Road Tragic Crash

Passenger Injured After Jeep and Trailer Overturn in Barstow

Barstow, CA (August 19, 2026) — Thomas Smith died and a passenger was injured Monday night after a frightening crash on Irwin Road in Barstow.

The San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office identified the driver as 26-year-old Thomas J. Smith of Victorville. The crash happened around 10:50 p.m. on northbound Irwin Road, south of Bishop Road.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the Jeep entered the right shoulder and overturned for reasons still under investigation. Smith was ejected and suffered fatal injuries. Emergency personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.

A passenger also suffered injuries and went to a local hospital. Officials did not release the passenger’s identity or condition. A small dog was also inside the vehicle and was later taken into the care of Smith’s family.

CHP investigators believe alcohol and/or drugs may have contributed to the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
