Traffic Collision on Interstate 670 Claims a Life

One Killed, Two Critically Injured in Wrong-Way Crash on I-670 in Kansas City

Kansas City, MO (May 19, 2025) — A wrong-way collision on Interstate 670 in downtown Kansas City early Sunday left one person dead and two others critically injured.

According to the Kansas City Police Department, the crash happened around 2:45 a.m. on westbound I-670 near Locust Street. Investigators said a white Kia Optima was traveling east in the westbound lanes when it crossed multiple lanes and collided with a black Chevrolet Avalanche.

Three passengers inside the Kia suffered life-threatening injuries. Emergency crews transported them to a hospital, where one victim later died. The other two remained in critical condition.

Authorities said both drivers escaped injury, but investigators suspect impairment may have contributed to the crash.

Police closed all westbound lanes of I-670 for several hours while crews investigated and cleared the scene. The roadway has since reopened.

The fatal collision marked the city’s 29th traffic death of the year.
