Horrific Traffic Crash on Mattole Road Bridge Kills 2 [Humboldt County, CA]

Humboldt County, CA (July 8, 2026) — Early Monday morning, 2 people lost their lives, and another suffered severe injuries after a frightening crash on Mattole Road Bridge near Mattole Camp in Humboldt County.

According to authorities, emergency calls began around 2:20 a.m., but the exact crash location was initially unknown. Minutes later, another caller reported that a vehicle carrying multiple occupants had gone off the bridge and landed about 50 feet below in the river.

Firefighters, rescue teams, the California Highway Patrol, and ambulance crews responded to the scene. Rescuers found the vehicle submerged and located three occupants along the riverbank. They immediately began lifesaving efforts on two victims while stabilizing the third. Despite nearly 50 minutes of CPR, the two victims were pronounced dead. The surviving occupant, who sustained severe injuries, was rescued from the steep embankment and transported to a hospital.

Authorities have not determined what caused the crash. The California Highway Patrol’s Garberville Area office continues to investigate.
