One Dead After E-Scooter Crash on Northbound Mopac in Austin

Austin, TX (August 28, 2026) — One person died Wednesday morning after a frightening collision on MoPac Expressway. An e-scooter rider was struck by multiple vehicles.

Austin police responded to the crash near the 4500 block of North MoPac Expressway shortly before 5 a.m. Austin-Travis County EMS said the adult scooter rider died at the scene.

Police reported that the involved driver stayed at the scene. Authorities temporarily closed northbound MoPac through the 4700 block while crews investigated. The freeway reopened around 10:15 a.m.

Officials urged drivers to avoid the area and use alternate routes while the investigation continued.

According to Austin’s Vision Zero dashboard, six e-scooter riders had been killed or seriously injured in the city through August 10, 2026, compared with 11 throughout all of 2025.
