Tragic Crash Near Lockwood Drive Claims a Life [Houston, TX]

Wrong-Way Crash on East Freeway Near Lockwood Kills One, Critically Injures Another

Houston, TX (February 12, 2026) — Houston police are investigating a deadly wrong-way crash near Lockwood Drive that shut down multiple westbound lanes of the East Freeway early Tuesday morning.

Authorities said a Kia traveling westbound was struck head-on by an Acura sports car that was driving the wrong direction in the westbound lanes at a high speed. Investigators believe the crash may be linked to an earlier report of a wrong-way driver on U.S. 59 near Minute Maid Park, citing similarities in timing and vehicle description.

A nearby TxDOT road crew witnessed the collision and reported that the impact caused the Acura to break apart and catch fire. The male driver of the Acura became trapped inside the burning vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene by responding firefighters. The vehicle did not have a license plate, and investigators plan to identify the driver by retrieving the VIN at an impound lot.

The woman driving the Kia suffered serious injuries and was unconscious at the scene. Paramedics transported her to a hospital in critical condition. The Harris County Medical Examiner responded due to the fatality.

Officials expect the freeway closure to last several hours as crews clear the scene and investigators continue their work. Drivers were urged to avoid the area and use alternate routes.
