Police Investigate Fatal Solo Vehicle Crash on Interstate 280 in San Jose
SAN JOSE, CA (December 25, 2025) — An elderly man and a woman were tragically killed after a crash on Interstate 280 on Wednesday when their vehicle crashed into the center median near State Route 85, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP units were dispatched to the scene at approximately 8:50 p.m., where they discovered the vehicle overturned with both occupants unresponsive.
Authorities confirmed that the victims were pronounced deceased at the scene.
According to CHP Officer Ross Lee, the preliminary investigation indicates that the vehicle was traveling southbound on I-280 when it struck the center wall, overturned, and ultimately came to rest in the northbound lanes.
At this time, investigators have not determined whether alcohol or other factors contributed to the crash.
The collision caused significant traffic disruptions, resulting in a full closure of southbound lanes for approximately two hours and northbound lanes for nearly three hours as crews worked to investigate the incident and clear the roadway.
All lanes were later reopened once the scene was secured.
The crash remains under investigation, and no additional details have been released.
