Tyler Lenehan Dies in DUI Wrong-Way Crash on Highway 99 [Sacramento, CA]

Sacramento, CA (January 22, 2022) – On Friday, Elk Grove Police Department officer Tyler Lenehan died in a DUI wrong-way crash on Highway 99.

The CHP received the crash report at around 5:13 a.m. on the southbound freeway near 47th Avenue.

Immediately, the authorities responded to the crash scene and discovered that the wrong-way driver had collided with a police motorcycle. 

When officers arrived at the crash scene, they found Lenehan ejected from his motorcycle and suffering from life-threatening injuries. 

They rushed him to Lenehan to UC Davis Medical Center, where he later died. 

Police said Lenehan was on his way to work when 31-year-old Jermaine Walton of Sacramento struck him.

Officers said Walton was driving northbound 2016 Dodge Challenger in the southbound lanes when the accident happened. Apparently, officers found him walking away from the scene when they arrived.

Moreover, officers said Walton displayed signs and symptoms of alcohol intoxication. They arrested him on suspicion of being under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

Walton was booked on felony charges of murder, driving under the influence, wrong-way driving, and causing an accident resulting in injury.

At this time, the authorities have not yet determined how fast either vehicle was going.  They said they are still investigating this fatal incident.

Meanwhile, there will be a vigil at the Elk Grove Police Department, 8400 Laguna Palms Way, at 6:30 p.m.
