Violent Crash Near Truman Road Results in Injuries [Independence, MO]

Independence, MO (May 19, 2025) — On Saturday afternoon, four people suffered injuries, including two in critical condition, after a police chase ended in a violent crash near Truman Road.

According to investigators, the collision happened around 4:40 p.m. near the intersection of South Lee’s Summit Road and East Truman Road. Police said the driver of a 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe was fleeing officers while traveling northbound on Lee’s Summit Road. As the SUV approached the intersection, the driver crossed into oncoming traffic lanes and slammed into a 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander traveling east on Truman Road.

The impact caused the Outlander to overturn. All four occupants inside the Mitsubishi suffered injuries, and two passengers sustained life-threatening injuries.

After the crash, the Tahoe driver reportedly fled on foot but officers later arrested the suspect nearby on South Baker Drive. Authorities also arrested a passenger who remained at the scene. Police have not confirmed whether the suspects were hurt.

Investigators said the pursuit began after officers responded to suspicious activity at a Walmart Supercenter on South Bolger Drive. Officers noticed two individuals leaving the store and entering the Tahoe. When police attempted a traffic stop because the license plate did not match the vehicle, the driver sped away, triggering the pursuit.

Officers later lost sight of the SUV before locating it again near East 23rd Street and Lee’s Summit Road. Police attempted another stop, but the driver fled once more before crashing at Truman Road.

The incident comes as Independence officials continue reviewing the department’s pursuit policies following several serious and fatal crashes connected to police chases in recent years.
