Kirksville Woman and Two Children Hospitalized After Highway 63 Collision

Kirksville, MO (August 6, 2026) — A two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Highway 63 and Highway 11 in Kirksville sent Whitney Thompson and two children to the hospital Tuesday morning.

According to Kirksville police, the collision happened shortly after 8 a.m. near the NEMO Fairgrounds.

Reports say that 27-year-old Caleb Ruether was driving an SUV westbound on Highway 11 when he failed to yield at the intersection and pulled into the path of a northbound SUV driven by 27-year-old Whitney Thompson of Kirksville.

Thompson sustained minor injuries and was transported by ambulance to Northeast Regional Medical Center. Two children riding in her vehicle were also taken to the hospital for evaluation as a precaution.

Ruether was not injured in the crash. Authorities cited him for failing to yield to oncoming traffic at a stop intersection.

The crash temporarily reduced traffic on Highway 63 to one lane while crews cleared the scene.

Keeping the Road Safe is Everyone’s Responsibility

Be a defensive driver to prevent road accidents. Stay alert, maintain a safe distance, and always expect the unexpected. Avoid distractions, obey speed limits, and use your signals. Watch for pedestrians and cyclists. A proactive, cautious approach keeps everyone safer on the road. Drive smart, drive safe!

Failure to yield at intersections can lead to preventable crashes and place drivers, passengers, and children at risk of injury. Motorists should always obey traffic signs and ensure the roadway is clear before proceeding. If you or a loved one has been injured in a collision caused by another driver’s negligence, understanding your legal rights may help you recover compensation for medical expenses and other losses.

A Personal Injury Claim Could Help

A personal injury case is critical after a car accident, especially when there is an injured party caused by another driver’s carelessness. Automobile accidents can lead to painful physical injuries, emotional distress, and financial ruin. Medical expenses, lost income, and expenses for long-term recovery don’t take long to add up. One option for reaching a fair resolution to these damages is a personal injury lawsuit.

Filing a court action holds the wrongdoer accountable. It also forces insurance providers to offer a reasonable settlement, rather than a low-ball offer that may not be enough to cover all of your losses. In too many instances, the insurers who shouldn’t be in the business of trying to maximize their profits often look for ways to minimize their payouts. And your rights will be protected with the personal injury claim throughout this process.

Also, in a personal injury lawsuit, you may be able to recover noneconomic damages such as pain and suffering or loss of enjoyment of life. It’s often no less important than your medical bills. In suing, you also encourage safer driving by reinforcing the accountability of reckless or negligent drivers.

If you do retain an experienced personal injury lawyer, the case is likely to proceed much more smoothly, and not only will you be led through the legal process, you will likely have a better chance of a positive outcome as well.
