William Randolph Smith Killed in 2-Vehicle Crash on I-20 [Midland County, TX]

Midland County, TX (July 29, 2025) Early Saturday, a tragic wrong-way crash on I-20 claimed the lives of 78-year-old William Randolph Smith and 34-year-old Henry Anthony Vela and left a passenger seriously injured.

According to authorities, the fatal crash happened around 1:20 a.m. in the westbound lanes near mile marker 129.

Reports say that an eastbound 2004 Ford F-150 slammed head-on into a 2025 Toyota Sienna. The Ford burst into flames upon impact, and both vehicles ended up blocking the westbound lanes.

Authorities identified the driver of the Ford as Vela of Midland and the driver of the Toyota as Smith of Pflugerville. Both men died at the scene. A passenger in the Toyota, 52-year-old Diana Marquez, sustained serious injuries and was transported to Midland Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
