Young Driver Killed, Two Injured in Highway 46 Collision Near Wasco

Bakersfield, CA (January 20, 2026) — On Saturday afternoon, a tragic crash on Highway 46 near Wasco claimed the life of a 20-year-old man and left two others injured.

According to authorities, the collision occurred around 1:16 p.m. west of Smith Avenue.

Investigators said the young man was driving a 2003 Toyota Camry eastbound when his vehicle crossed into the westbound lane. At the same time, a 60-year-old man was traveling westbound in a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado.

The Silverado’s driver attempted to steer right to avoid a collision, but the front of the Toyota struck the front of the Chevrolet in the westbound lane.

Emergency crews responded and pronounced the Toyota’s driver dead at the scene. The driver of the Chevrolet and a female passenger suffered moderate to major injuries and were transported to a hospital in Bakersfield for treatment.

Authorities reported that alcohol or drugs do not appear to have played a role in the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
