Police Investigate Accident on U.S. 93 in Gilbert

Gilbert, AZ (April 21, 2026)— A Gilbert family is recovering after a frightening freeway accident on U.S. 93 when a piece of metal crashed through their windshield.

Marissa Kendel rode in the passenger seat while her husband, Casey Kendel, drove with their two children in the back seat. 

As the family traveled southbound, a trailer hitch suddenly flew toward their vehicle.

Casey Kendel said he saw a truck waver before a rear tire launched the hitch into the air. The metal piece flipped end over end before smashing through the windshield and landing in the center console.

The hitch narrowly missed Marissa Kendel, who was struck by shattered glass. Casey Kendel and the couple’s two children were not injured.

Marissa Kendel suffered eye injuries and bruising. She said glass entered both of her eyes during the impact. 

Emergency crews arrived within minutes after Casey called 911 and transported her to a hospital for treatment.

The family said they do not know where the trailer hitch came from and described it as appearing “like a missile out of nowhere.”

Their vehicle was towed from the scene and remains in a repair shop while an insurance claim is processed. 

The family also thanked responding officers for helping arrange the tow, contact their insurance company, and deliver their luggage to the hospital.
