Three Killed in Wrong-Way Head-On Crash on SR 86 Near Tucson

Tucson, AZ (September 16, 2026) — On Sunday morning, three people died after a wrong-way driver caused a head-on collision on State Route 86 west of Tucson.

Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers responded shortly after 3 a.m. near South Continental Road, just south of Ryan Airfield. Investigators determined that a man drove east in the westbound lanes and collided head-on with another vehicle.

The driver of the second vehicle and his female passenger died at the scene. The wrong-way driver, who was alone in his vehicle, suffered fatal injuries and later died at a hospital.

Authorities have not released the identities of those involved. Investigators believe impairment may have contributed to the crash and continue to investigate.
