Police Investigate Wrong-Way Crash on Interstate 580 in Alameda County

ALAMEDA COUNTY, CA (September 10, 2026)— Authorities arrested a driver and passenger after a fleeing vehicle traveled the wrong way on Interstate 580, struck another vehicle, and prompted a temporary shutdown of the freeway.

According to the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began at approximately 11:25 a.m. when a deputy attempted to stop a blue Ford Mustang for an alleged traffic violation.

The driver did not stop. Deputies said they chose not to pursue the Mustang because of concerns for public safety.

Authorities later located the vehicle using automated license plate reader technology.

Investigators said the Mustang was subsequently seen traveling the wrong way on eastbound I-580. During the incident, the Mustang collided with another vehicle but continued fleeing.

California Highway Patrol officers later attempted to conduct a high-risk traffic stop. Authorities said the Mustang driver continued until the vehicle became disabled and came to a stop.

Officials then shut down Interstate 580 in both directions while deputies and officers worked to get the driver and the vehicle’s sole passenger to surrender.

The passenger eventually exited the Mustang and surrendered, authorities said. The driver allegedly continued refusing commands until deputies deployed a chemical irritant. The driver then exited the vehicle and was taken into custody.

Emergency personnel transported both occupants of the Mustang to a nearby hospital for treatment of injuries described as non-life-threatening.

The driver of the vehicle struck by the Mustang was also taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities continue to investigate the events surrounding the attempted traffic stop, wrong-way driving, collision, and arrests.

Sweet Lawyers Supports Victims Injured in Wrong-Way and Fleeing-Driver Crashes

When another driver’s dangerous actions cause a collision, injured motorists deserve compassionate support, clear information, and help understanding the next steps after the crash.

Wrong-way collisions are among the most frightening crashes that can occur on a freeway. Drivers often have little time to react when another vehicle appears in the wrong lanes of travel, and even a brief encounter can result in serious injuries, extensive vehicle damage, and lasting emotional trauma.

At Sweet Lawyers, we understand how overwhelming the aftermath of a serious freeway crash can be.

Injured motorists may face emergency treatment, follow-up medical care, time away from work, insurance disputes, transportation problems, and uncertainty about how their injuries will affect everyday life.

Crashes involving a fleeing driver can become particularly complex. Investigators may review law enforcement reports, traffic-camera footage, automated license plate reader data, witness statements, vehicle damage, roadway evidence, and other records to determine how the collision unfolded.

When law enforcement activity precedes a crash, there may also be multiple agencies involved in documenting the incident.

For injured victims, preserving information can be important.

Medical records, photographs of injuries and vehicle damage, police reports, witness contact information, repair estimates, insurance correspondence, and documentation of missed work may help establish how the collision affected a person physically and financially.

Sweet Lawyers assists individuals and families affected by serious motor vehicle accidents, including wrong-way crashes, freeway collisions, and incidents involving drivers accused of fleeing law enforcement.

Our team focuses on compassionate communication and helping injured people better understand the general personal injury process.

Even when injuries are initially described as non-life-threatening, victims may still experience pain, mobility issues, emotional distress, and unexpected medical complications in the days or weeks after a collision.

Follow-up care and careful documentation can therefore remain important throughout recovery.

If you or someone you love has been injured in a wrong-way or high-speed freeway collision, you can learn more about available resources through Sweet Lawyers.

Sweet Lawyers is committed to treating every injured person with dignity and respect while providing clear, compassionate support during a difficult and uncertain time.
