Zach Vasquez Hurt in Fatal Crash on Highway 67

Erik Hernandez of Monahans Killed in Brewster County Head-On Crash

Brewster County, TX (June 25, 2025) — A head-on crash on U.S. Highway 67 in Brewster County claimed the life of Erik Hernandez of Monahans and seriously injured Zach Vasquez, a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper, on Tuesday morning.

According to authorities, the collision happened around 7:36 a.m. about five miles east of Alpine. Investigators said a 2022 GMC Sierra traveling westbound crossed into the eastbound lane and collided head-on with a DPS patrol Tahoe.

The driver of the GMC, 28-year-old Erik Alberto Hernandez, died at the scene. Trooper Vasquez, 26, of Alpine, suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to University Medical Center in El Paso for treatment.

Officials reported that a DPS K-9 riding in the patrol vehicle was not injured.

The Brewster County Sheriff’s Office said several bystanders rushed to help after the crash, assisting Vasquez from the overturned patrol vehicle and providing first aid until emergency crews arrived.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the collision.
